The world is dying and we have ourselves to blame. Deforestation is a huge problem around the world right now. It goes beyond simply destroying forests. We’re destroying the home of various and rare animal species which will inevitably lead to the destruction of our (and theirs) ecosystem.
Science is trying its best, yet saving nature requires everyone to chip in. And, while we’re donating billions and billions of dollars to restore burnt churches, rarely anyone is interested in donating to save nature. We’re not saying that churches don’t matter, we’re just saying that nature should be our priority since our life depends on it.
The good news is that some people are ready to do everything they can to stop our planet from dying. Hansjorg Wyss, CEO of the Wyss Foundation, decided to donate a billion dollars over the next ten years toward environmental conservation. The Swiss entrepreneur will buy huge areas of land all over the world himself and turn them into public parks. It’s nice to know that at least someone cares for the environment.
In an interview for The New York Times, Wyss said that his love for nature was born when he was hiking and climbing as a child. He believes that wildlands are best preserved when they’re open to the public, not in private hands. He also asked all billionaires and philanthropists to follow his lead and protect the natural world before it perishes. According to his projections, his efforts may protect up to 30% of our planet by 2030.
Wyss isn’t planning on stopping with his donations. Since his pledge, he has donated $66 million to 9 wildlife conservation organizations. The Dehcho First Nations in Canada received $750,000 to create a program for the restoration of the Edenhzie National Wildlife Area in the Northwest Territories. The Aves Argentinas conservation group in Argentina received nearly $6 million to create a 1.5-million-acre national park. Wyss is planning to continue with his donations which will hopefully protect our planet.
This isn’t the first time the Swiss businessman has donated to protect the natural world. In the past 2 decades, he has silently donated millions to similar efforts. The man obviously loves our planet more than politicians and corporations who claim they’re all for the protection of the natural world.
If more people like Wyss follow in his footsteps, Mother Nature will prevail. Otherwise, we may all be doomed.
