Turmeric is quite the popular spice these days, and there are good reasons why. The golden spice is considered a “miracle” spice with over 600 studies that have confirmed its health benefits.
Most of the properties are attributed to its active compound curcumin, but turmeric also has a wide range of other nutrients that can significantly boost your overall health. Turmeric can improve your digestion and strengthen your immune system, but according to a new study, it can also promote brain regeneration.
An overlooked benefit of the spice
Interestingly, turmeric’s ability to promote brain regeneration isn’t down to just curcumin. In fact, researchers have found a new compound known as ar-turmerone in the spice which can regenerate your brain. This fat-soluble compound has been extensively studied recently, especially for its effects on neural stem cells in rats and in vitro.
The in vitro studies have shown that ar-turmerone can increase the number of neural stem cells by up to 80%, while the rats grew new brain cells in the hippocampus and subventricular zone, which produce fresh neurons. The size of these parts of the brain also increased, which shows that the compound has potent healing effects.
These studies breathe new hope in the search for potential Alzheimer’s disease cure, but they can also lead to the development of cures for degenerative diseases including stroke. Ar-turmerone essentially promotes stem cell proliferation and differentiates the stem cells to neurons which helps the brain regenerate.
Other studies have shown that turmeric may also improve both short and long-term memory of Alzheimer’s patients, although human trials may be required before anything can be concluded.
What does this mean?
In simple terms, it means that turmeric could become a cornerstone for future regenerative medications which can help with Alzheimer’s diseases and other neurodegenerative diseases as well.
Most people think that the best way of using turmeric is using the extract powder, but experts consider fresh turmeric root the far better choice. It is better for treatment of some ailments as it’s quickly absorbed in the small intestine, which means it’ll have a better effect.
Although there’s need for more extensive research, recent studies have shown that ar-turmerone is a powerful compound that can regenerate the brain, which makes turmeric an absolute must in your diet. Add a pinch in your meals or morning smoothie and you will definitely improve your overall health and your brain function as well.
