Spending quality time with your parents shouldn’t end just because you’ve moved out. In fact, as they get older, you should spend even more time with them. As they age, their social circle gets tinier. Their friends relocate or move to retirement communities or they simply pass away. And, is life worth living without friends or relatives? This is why older people often suffer from loneliness, which is no way to pass away your final years.
That’s when your parents need your friendship the most. Just call them and invite them over for dinner – it will do a lot of good for their mental health. It has even been scientifically confirmed. A recent California University study has shown that loneliness plays a big role in age decline and even increases the risk of death. Around 23% of the 1,600 participants passed away within 6 years of the study, compared to only 14% of those who socialized regularly.
Another study revealed that 1 out of 3 people in the USA are lonely. This was most likely the reason for their hastened age decline and high levels of inflammation in their bodies. This shows what we previously said – that loneliness is a silent killer. If you don’t want the same to happen to your parents, you should hang out with them more often.
Isolation is never a good thing and it’s especially hard for older people. You know what can help? That’s right – spending more time with them. The elderly need social bonds to prosper – it affects their quality of life and longevity as well. In short, spending more time with your aging parents can prolong their lives. If you really don’t have the time, you can drop your children off with your parents. It’s a well-known fact that parents love grandchildren – they make them laugh and fill their hearts with joy, which contributes to better overall health.
So, please spend time with your parents when they get older. It will make them feel alive once again and help them live life with dignity once again.
