Ants in your home? We’re sure you’d like to get rid of them. No matter the fact that they are harmless, no one likes ants in their home. They are harmful for your plants and food and are really difficult to get rid of.
The carpenter, pharaoh, pavement, odorous and acrobat house ants are the most common ants that invade our homes. Dealing with them is a special experience – the commercial pesticides rarely work and are very harmful for your health and the health of those around you. Instead of putting your family and pets at risk, we suggest eliminating the ants from your home naturally. There are many remedies which can help remove the ants without any adverse side-effects.
How to keep ants away from your home
Ants love sugar and have a strong sense of smell, so unless its ant proof, don’t leave sugary snacks and food in your countertop or cupboards. The smell of the insects is so strong that they can detect sugar in an empty soda can, so make sure to wash these containers before you throw them out in order to prevent ants from invading your home.
Instead of pesticide-filled products, we suggest using the following remedies to remove ants from your home:
- 1 cup water
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon oil
- Cotton balls
- Cinnamon cloves
Pour the cinnamon oil in the water, stir well, then soak a few cotton balls in the mixture and rub all the surfaces in your home with them. Pay special attention to the areas frequented by the ants. Be consistent and rub the surfaces every day and there won’t be a single ant in your home soon. Additionally, you can put cinnamon cloves on your windows in order to keep the ants from coming in.
Ants just hate vinegar and how it smells, so you can use the liquid in order to eliminate them. Here’s what you need to do:
- Spray bottle
- Lemon oil
Mix equal amounts of water and vinegar in a spray bottle, then proceed by adding the lemon oil and mix well. Shake the bottle before each use and spray it all around your home, and especially in the areas frequented by ants.
Borax is a great and effective method for eliminating ants and other insects for that matter. The Borax balls are a perfect Trojan horse – they will attract the ants which will take them home, where the chemical kills the entire colony.
- 1 teaspoon water
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon Borax
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter
Mix the Borax, sugar, water and peanut butter in a plastic container, stirring well with a spoon. Now, cover the container with a lid and poke holes in it with a knife. Make a few holes in the sides of the container as well. The ants will enter the container attracted by the sugary scent of the balls, but they won’t be able to get out. Even if they do, the Borax would kill them in their nest.
Ants hate peppermint just as much as vinegar, so using the herb against them is a great idea. Fill a spray bottle with warm water and add 10-15 drops peppermint oil – shake the mixture well and spray it all around your home. Repeat the process twice a day until all the ants are gone.
Dry peppermint can help as well – just sprinkle some of it near your windows, doors and around the trash can. Growing peppermint at home works just as well, and is a great long-term solution.
