0

As you’re probably aware, blueberries are a sweet fruit full of healthy nutrients. Besides the high amount of antioxidants, blueberries contain anthocyanins as well, a sub-class of flavonoids that give them their color, while also providing many of their great properties.

All the antioxidants in blueberries are behind their ability to prevent the buildup of plaque, fight free radicals, and prevent a variety of disorders. A recent study has shown that only a handful of blueberries can drastically improve our cardiovascular health and prevent myocardial infarction and other heart problems. Additionally, the antioxidants in these berries can reduce the risk of mental problems, improve digestion, and prevent various types of cancer.

Nutritional Information

Blueberries are a perfect snack – they are full of essential nutrients and have only 80 calories per cup. First and foremost, they are full of fiber which is great for our digestion, while also containing manganese, an often-overlooked mineral. Manganese actually plays important roles in our body – it regulates our blood sugar levels, calcium absorption, fat and carb metabolism, sex hormones, and helps the body form connective tissue as well. And that’s without mentioning its effect on our brain and mental health.

All of this makes blueberries great for our health, but if you’re getting them organic as you should, they can be pretty expensive. Luckily, they are quite easy to grow indoors and we’re going to show you what you need to do. By growing your own blueberries, you’ll have your own fresh endless supply of this heavenly fruit.

How to Grow Blueberries at Home

First things first – you need a blueberry variant that grows in pots. We recommend getting to so-called top hat blueberries. Next comes the soil. Find soil with a pH between 4.5-5, and get a short and wide pot as well. Of course, the pot needs to have drainage holes if you want your blueberries to grow.

Now that you have everything you need, it’s time to start planting. Fill 2/3 of the pot with an acidic soil mix, then put the blueberry bush right in the center. Fill in the edges around while holding the bush gently and position the blueberry bush properly. Add more soil if needed, but don’t choke the bush with a lot of it – it needs to breathe.

The final step is to water the soil, then add an inch or two of acidic mulch. Put your blueberry bush in a sunny spot and watch it grow. Once the berries are ready, you can harvest them. Enjoy!
