Should Name-calling Be Considered Abuse?

When we hear the term “abuse”, we usually think about physical forms of abuse such as beating. However, abuse can come in many forms. Verbal abuse is just as dangerous as physical abuse and can leave deep emotional scars.

Due to its effects on our mental health, verbal abuse is right there at the top with any kind of abuse. It can hurt anyone regardless of age, level of communication or mental capacity. Verbal abuse can be direct, subtle, aggressive or passive – no matter the type, you will surely go through a lot if you’re on the receiving end of things.

This is why it’s important to learn the signs and symptoms of verbal abuse on time. The earlier you recognize the abuser, the easier it’ll be on your mind. Ignore the problem, and the damage may already be done.

Signs and Symptoms of Verbal Abuse

Apart from depression and suicidal thoughts, verbal abuse can cause hormone imbalance, PTSD, migraines, memory problems, eating and sleeping disorders, gastrointestinal problems, and chronic anxiety and fear.

Mental abuse can be difficult to spot sometimes and it can occur anywhere. You can experience it at work, at home, on the street or in the market.

Here’s how to recognize abusers and stop them from damaging your mental health:

They Are Great at Laying Blame

Abusers always try to accuse someone else and lay the blame on them even when they’re guilty. They also blame their victims for things that are completely out of their control.

They Trivialize

Abusers will always minimize their victims’ desires and opinions, just to make them feel small.

They Withhold Key Information

Abusers often withhold important information and are quite secretive, making living with them impossible.

Angry Outbursts

Abusers are usually angry when things don’t go their way, screaming and yelling even when there’s no need to.

They Will Threaten You

Sending threats is one of the major signs of verbal abuse. It gives the abuser control over the victim as it usually makes them too afraid.

They Are Highly Judgmental

Abusers are judgmental of the way their victims do anything. In general, they give a negative evaluation about everything their victim does.

They Block and Divert

Abusers will never admit they’re wrong. They will just block and divert the blame and limit discussions just so it fits their prerogative.

Name-calling

Name-calling can be subtle or explicit and is a major form of verbal abuse. If you notice that someone is calling you or your child names, act quickly before this type of verbal abuse destroys you or your kid.

They Will Try to Undermine You

Just like the way they trivialize stuff, abusers will often undermine your achievements and make you question your beliefs.

They Forget Stuff That Matters

Abusers never remember important dates or promises made to their victims. They just simply don’t care about their feelings.

They Are Bossy

Do you know how to recognize a straight-out abuser? They will often boss their victims around, telling them what to do all the time. In this way, they gain control over the victims in an unhealthy way, making them feel insecure.

Where to Get Help?

Verbal abuse isn’t something you should ignore. Just because the signs are less obvious shouldn’t make you blind to what’s going on. As soon as you notice the symptoms, stay calm and sever the relationship. If you know someone who’s being abused, let them know they’re not alone. It would really help them if you understand what they’re going through.
