When we are asked about how old we are, we tell people our age in years. Still, one important thing that we all need to know is the age of our bodies also called the biological age. Most of the time, it isn’t the same age as ours.
Chronological Age vs Biological Age
According to scientists, our bodies have two different ages: biological age and chronological age. The biological age means how old our bodies seem and the chronological age signifies the length of the life of our bodies.
Scientist recognize several ways to discover the biological age of a person. You can determine the length of the telomeres of one person. Telomeres are the protective ends of the chromosomes. These telomeres try to do everything they can in order to prevent the chromosome ends from fusing with a neighboring chromosome or deteriorating. In this way, they affect the way how quickly cells age as well as die.
According to the medical director and founder of the Grossman Wellness Center in Denver, Dr. Terry Grossman, whenever a cell divides, one telomere bead falls off from the end of the chromosome. It seems that there is a direct connection between the biological age and the telomere length. You have a greater chronological age as long as you live. Your telomeres have a shorter total length.
Still, there is a simpler way to help you discover the biological age that you can do at home!
Test Your Biological Age
It’s a very simple flexibility test. In order to prepare your body, you need to stretch your body lightly. You can do several slow jumping jacks. In this way, the blood will flow into your muscles freely.
Stand and join your feet. Then, bend at the hips and try to reach down using your hands. See how far you can get. If you don’t feel comfortable with keeping your legs straight, bent a little bit. Compare your result with the test results.
If you could…
- Your legs are straight. You touch the floor using your hands, but your muscles are relaxed. Your body feels flexible. You’re an average person of the ages from 20 to 25.
- Your legs are bent a little bit or they are straight, but you touch the floor using your fingertips. In case you don’t feel discomfort or you only feel it a little bit, your muscles are as flexible as in someone between 35 and 38.
- Your knees are bent or your legs are straight, but you only touch your feet or your toes. If you feel you have tense muscles and you feel great discomfort, it means that your muscle flexibility resembles to the one of a person between 38 and 50.
- You try to reach far, but you can’t touch your feet. You need to bend your knees too much. Your muscles become really painful in case you want to stretch further. You’ll have to stand up immediately, because your muscle flexibility resembles to a person who is over 50.
It’s up to you what kind of flexibility you would have. You can have a light stretching routine every day and try to build your own flexibility. Your muscles will be more stretched and you’ll feel amazing. The telomere length may be maintained with the help of a healthy diet, regular exercise and a completely healthy lifestyle.
